How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Gaining Weight!

Here we are again … HOLIDAY SEASON!

It happens every year!

You want to enjoy the holidays, but you also don’t want to sideline your goals.

I hear you … and I got you!

  1. MOVE YOUR BODY!

… Just go ahead and assume you’re going to be indulging in food and bevvies you may not normally indulge in! I mean - it’s the holidays! So, to “prep” for that (NOT to “earn” your calories), move your body! Enjoy a walk, go for a hike, lift weights at home or the gym, ride your bike, take a swim. Whatever feels good to you! Your body will NEED more calories if you’re moving + you’ll feel better and more energized!

2. EAT BEFORE THE PARTY!

… If you’re going to a party, have a big ‘ol apple and glass of water before going. That apple is tasty and full of fiber. The water will hydrate you AND make that fiber expand a little in your belly!

3. ENJOY “SPECIAL” FOODS!

… What are foods that you associate with this holiday and can’t wait to have? Maybe something special that a friend or family member makes and you only eat it on this holiday? ENJOY IT! If not, you’ll feel completely deprived that you missed your Grandma’s famous apple pie (or whatever)!

4. FOR THE REST OF YOUR PLATE, FILL UP ON PROTEIN AND OTHER WHOLE FOODS!

… After choosing the “special” food(s) you’ll enjoy, fill your plate with protein, fruit, vegetables, whole grains. Try to steer clear of foods with sugary/fatty sauces or alot of cheese (unless it’s in your special food!).

5. BRING A DISH OF YOUR OWN!

… Contribute to the potluck party yourself if you can! Bring a dish that’s full of whole foods that will compliment any of the other dishes guests bring. You can fill your plate with food from your own dish if needed!

6. ALTERNATE WATER WITH ALCOHOL!

… One glass of water - One alcoholic drink - REPEAT! … and try to stick with light beer, wine spritzer, vodka/tonic vs sugary drinks or high-cal beers/ciders.

7. HAVE FUN!

… At the end of the day, have fun and enjoy yourself! Focus more on being social with friends and family vs food.

Know that this holiday or party is just ONE DAY!

…. And ONE DAY will NOT derail you! It may actually be good for you to ease up on more restrictive eating and just enjoy yourself. It keeps you from feeling deprived, gives you something to look forward to and then you’re ready to hop back on the wagon the next day!

So, enjoy the PARTY!

Enjoy the HOLIDAY!

Smile and be grateful!
